Vibram Five Fingers

I have been seeing a few more people wearing the Vibram Five Fingers so did some looking around. The Vibrams are the shoes that are being used by the barefoot runners when they want to wear shoes (sounds a bit odd to me!). The whole idea of behind those promoting barefoot running is that it is supposed to lower the number of overuse injuries that runners get. From what I can ascertain is that the opposite is actually the case.

I came across this article in the San Francisco Weekly (Vibram FiveFingers shoes and the annoying people who buy them) that those who buy Vibram Five Fingers are the most annoying customers they have! Then there was a comment on this Vibram Five Fingers discussion, that one sports shop that offers money back guarantees, is getting a whopping 50% return on the Vibrams! And this discussion on Vibram FiveFingers Cause Metatarsal Stress Fractures? And this article on it: Stress Fractures in the Vibram FiveFinger’s  and this reporter who got one: Minimalist Sneakers Send Runner Limping Away. The US army have banned them: U.S. Army Outlaws Vibram Five Fingers.  A visit to any barefoot running forum shows a lot of people asking about their injuries which barefoot runners are claimed not to get!

It is difficult to get some unbiased reviews on barefoot sites about the Vibrams, they all seem to love them, but I never seen any mention on these sites about all the problems that are being discussed or mentioned elsewhere.

Think I will stay away from them.

Smelly Shoes

The good wife has been getting a bit grumpy about the smelly shoes after runs. They seem fine to me. But we all know that we never seem to notice our own body odours! So I had to do something about it. I followed the advice here on smelly feet. It was cheap and worked well. Turns out the odour is due to the bacteria breaking down the fats in the sweat. Now, only if I can find a simple and cheap sure for the shin splints!

Melbourne Marathon or Bust!

This is my blog of my attempt to lose weight and run the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday 9th October 2011.

Weight is currently 108kg and the race is 9 months away!

I do have some idea what I am doing, having done  having run competitively a number of years ago, but I just let things get away from me.

To get back in the swing of things I have done a lot of reading (books and on the web) looking for the best approach. I have recently read the Ultimate Guide to Marathon Running (I found it in an airport bookstore). It a good overview of all aspects of running and training, equipment and running the race. I also just got through Marathon Training Programme: how to run a sub 4 hour marathon (its a good read and was helpful. What is not helpful is the almost daily spam you get from the Peak Performance people trying to sell you more). I feel as though I still need to learn a lot more and will blog about what I learn. I feel very deficient in actually how to run the marathon with things like getting the nutrition right on the day and during the event, but that can wait for closer to day.
